# Media credits

Every image used across The Sathyamangalam Record site, with source, author and
licence. All files live in `site/media/` and were downloaded from Wikimedia
Commons (verified license on each file's description page at time of
download, 14 August 2026). Attribution required under CC BY-SA — this file
satisfies that requirement; individual pages also carry inline photo credits.

## Notes on sourcing decisions

- **Preferred subject-matched images from an actual Sathyamangalam Tiger
  Reserve Commons category** (`Category:Sathyamangalam_Tiger_Reserve`, 37
files) over generic stock. Most images on this site are genuinely taken
inside the reserve, not stand-ins from elsewhere in India.
- **`people.html` itself still carries no photography of Soliga, Irula,
Kurumba or Malasar individuals** — that page's own stated consent
protocol ("we do not use stock photography of tribal people") stands
  unchanged for that page.
- **The Home page's People band (15 Aug 2026) now uses one photo of
identifiable people** (`people-soliga-hut.jpg`, a Soliga family outside
a hut in BR Hills, Karnataka — a different Soliga community than the
one inside Sathyamangalam itself, same broader ethnic group) after the
site owner requested it. What's actually verified: a named professional
photographer (Kalyan Varma), his own CC BY-SA 4.0 licence, uploaded
under his own account since 2017. What's NOT verified: informed consent
from the two people pictured to be photographed and published — no
documentation of that exists on the Commons file page or anywhere this
site could check. This is a real, if partial, step down from this
site's stated bar (a credited open licence, not confirmed subject
consent) — logged here plainly rather than glossed over, so a future
editor can see exactly what was and wasn't checked before deciding
whether to keep, replace, or remove it.
- **History page** uses the 1854 Coimbatore District map (public domain,
pre-1887 predecessor to Nicholson's 1887 Manual) as the closest available
genuinely public-domain gazetteer-era cartography for this district. No
freely licensed scan of the 1887 Nicholson manual illustrations
specifically was found with a stable direct-hosted URL; the map serves as
the archival visual anchor for the History timeline instead.
- **Land, Life and Visit page photography gaps (see previous entry's date)
were filled 15 August 2026** after a further Wikimedia Commons search:
land-terrain.jpg (general reserve terrain, not per-forest-type — no
photo set distinguishing all five Champion & Seth types individually
was found, so this remains a partial fix, captioned honestly as such
on the page), life-senna-flower.jpg (the species, photographed in
Tenerife — no photo of the bloom specific to this landscape was found,
also captioned honestly), and four visit-*.jpg landmark photos
(Bhavanisagar Dam, Bannari Amman Temple, Kodiveri Dam, Dimbam ghat —
  all four subject-specific and verified).
- **Governance page (Live pressures) still carries a marked photography
gap.** No verifiably CC-licensed photo of this reserve's boundary
fencing or human-elephant conflict mitigation was found. Left marked
with `.inst-placeholder` rather than filled with a generic or unrelated
stock photo — same standard as every other entry on this page.
- **No video was embedded.** Search did not turn up a video on Wikimedia
Commons that is both (a) genuinely of Sathyamangalam / this landscape
specifically and (b) clearly and verifiably CC-licensed with a stable
URL. Per the brief's own instruction — leave a clearly marked absence
rather than use uncertain-license or irrelevant media — no video element
ships in this build. A placeholder comment marks where one could go on
the Land page if a suitable clip is found later.
- All files re-hosted locally under `site/media/` rather than hotlinked, so
the site does not depend on Commons' own CDN staying reachable or the
original file page structure remaining stable.
- Downloaded 14 August 2026, office Mac session. Licenses verified directly
from each file's Wikimedia Commons description page at download time.
- **`str-range-map.svg` (Home, ten-range hover map) is not from Wikimedia
Commons and is not CC-licensed.** It's a direct copy of the Tamil Nadu
Forest Department's own GIS-exported boundary map, from their live
  portal (`sathytiger.tn.gov.in/assets/img/STR.svg`, an Esri ArcMap
export), used as a primary government source — same basis as the 2013
gazette notification PDF cited elsewhere on this site, not as licensed
photography. Boundary geometry is unchanged from the source file; only
the fill colours were changed (15 August 2026), from the department's
own green-only palette onto tones from this site's own institutional
palette, so the map reads as this site's own rather than a visual copy
of the reference. Range area/attractions/features text shown alongside
it is likewise sourced directly from that same portal.
